Parting words from our readers

Mary L. Collins

I just read the news of the sale of Vermont Woman.  I know how much of your heart and soul has been poured into this.  It is your baby. Your blood, sweat and tears.

There are many young women here who have passion and who are clear-headed about Vermont's future for women, and all.   My hope is that someone will step forward, and soon, who can take your vision forward in a good way.

You have done good work. You have stuck to your vision. You have been a strong voice and advocate for women.  Few have that kind of stamina or resolve.

Knowing that the last issue was in the works, you’ve been on my mind quite a bit, Sue. Hope the sweet dwarfs the bitter.

Vermont Woman went where I don’t believe other paper were even expected to go.  It was informative and educational, provocative and thought-provoking.  It was unique and, at times, in-your-face.  Thanks to you, at one time it brought speakers of national and international prominence, rarely seen, some iconic, to our little corner of the world.  Vermont is now that much smaller and less unique with its passing.

I have been honored to be part of Vermont Woman for the last number of years since my return to Vermont. In addition to my StarLady column, it was very special to write about the herstory and rebirth of our State Goddess Ceres. I will be out of town on that October weekend, and will, sadly, miss the gathering. I would really have liked to be there with you all to celebrate the life and female verve of this ground-breaking publication.

Onward in new forms…

Very sad to hear of Vermont Woman's transition, and beyond grateful to you and others labor of love for this iconic newspaper. I look forward to the gathering, and may the right person show up to take the helm, as we need this paper in Vermont.

Thank for all the years of work, for widely representing women in Vermont, for all the invitations to the lecture series and everything you and Jan and the various editors and writers have done to keep women aware of what's up here. So sorry to see it go and kudos for all the well- deserved rewards.

Gal Perry

I heard that you are printing your last issue this week! That’s unbelievable after all this time. What a ride. Maybe you are planning to retire. If so it is well deserved. I have enjoyed working with you both. We all will miss you here. Congratulations and good luck.

Hi Sue, Jan, and Kate, and all. So many good writers, great memories, and articles. Let's hope we will spawn great ideas for a new generation of VW! It's not as if women's issues have gone away....

I just want to say how important Vermont Woman has been to our community.  I always felt every community should have a women’s publication like yours.  I loved the breadth of the reporting and really appreciated the lecture series.  I will miss your presence in print.  I hope you find a strong female buyer to follow in your footsteps.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors and am saving my last issue for posterity.

Garrison Nelson: A salute to Suzanne Gillis

Commentary from Vermont Digger - Sep 24 2019

Editor’s note: Garrison Nelson is a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Vermont.

The decision of Suzanne Gillis to put her creation Vermont Women up for sale will open yet another chapter in the remarkable life and career of a woman who I have known for close to 40 years as my student, my dear friend and in many ways, my role model. Creating one newspaper let alone four — two versions of Vermont Woman, Vermont Times and a paper in Provincetown, Massachusetts — would have crushed the entrepreneurial spirit of any would-be publisher.

But not Suzanne.

Her determination, vision, and creativity have been on public display for decades. Her courage and resilience resonate on every page of her newspapers.

We will all miss her unique voice in Vermont Woman and hope that its next publisher realizes what a gift was provided to all of us in Vermont, women and men alike in her paper.

The best news is that Suzanne is still with us and I look forward to enjoying the next iteration of her fearless and creative energy.

It's very early Monday morning and I've been reading the final issue of Vermont Woman with much pleasure -- and of course, sadness.  What an enormous amount you've accomplished over all these years!  I hope you're very proud of all you've done to honor and advocate for women in this area, and to forefront and analyze the issues involved in the global struggle.  And speaking personally, I so much appreciate how supportive you've always been of me and my books.  It's been a wild ride for all of us, hasn't it?  Lots of fun and lots of heartache, in maybe equal measure.  But I think you can safely say that you've fought the good fight and have lived a life full of meaning and purpose.  Very many congratulations, and may your remaining years be filled with peace and relaxation -- and more visits with old friends!
